Informational web sites usually separate dynamic content such as blogs, discussions, online stores, and search from the main content sections.
Sites work that way because different programs are installed on the server, and they can't share information with each other.
Web Site Integration
For my portfolio site, I wrote the code to integrate those features so they are context sensitive. For example, clicking the photography icon returns not only pictures, but also blog entries, exhibit reviews, search results, images for sale, and contact forms that are relevant to that topic.
The entries are ordered chronologically, as in a typical blog. I pinned more permanent and frequently accessed content in the about and project sections.
All the entries are filtered based on the visitor's current location in the hierarchy of the site.
I'm hoping this is more useful navigation, leading potiential clients directly to my most relevant content.
Writing Style
A good interface is important, but for a successful blog, the writing is even more critical.
The major news outlets are an excellent source for identifying effective writing techniques. Their online articles have a style of writing that is easy to scan. The techniques are simple:
I also increased line spacing and whitespace around my paragraphs, for easier reading.
